Frequently Asked Questions

“Holistic” seems like a woo woo buzz word but what does it really mean?

To us, “holistic” means encompassing the whole of a thing, and not just the part. Holistic wellness emphasizes the organic or functional relation between parts and the whole by looking at the whole person for answers, not just at physical symptoms.

What do you mean by “Recovery”?

We ascribe to SAMHSA’s definition: Recovery is a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.

Do I have to be sober to attend Holistic Recovery meetings?

No, per our working definition of “recovery” the only prerequisite to attend our Holistic Recovery meeting is an intention to improve upon any facet of life . . . all we ask is that you do not show up under the influence so that you may participate fully as your authentic self.

What if I am not a drug addict? Will I still gain something from attending holistic recovery meetings?

Yes! Holistic recovery is not solely about substance misuse but also about gaining control over different aspects of your life whether it is controlling your emotions, your thoughts, beliefs, or substance use – we can all learn from each other’s experience and strive to be better at being human

I already go to 12-step meetings, why should I also attend holistic recovery meetings?

Holistic recovery meetings provide a less structured and more inclusive peer support group where the goal is not to be substance free but rather to live a self-directed, intentional, productive, and joyful  life.

I do not resonate with 12-step programs so why would I connect with holistic recovery?

Holistic recovery is a well-rounded approach to becoming the person that you want to become. It’s about progressing as a person and not focused on rigid rules around substance use although it encompasses tools and skills that can assist in getting control of parts of life that feel outside of our control including substance use and/or misuse

I am not religious; do I have to believe in God or a higher power to get something out of holistic recovery?

No, in holistic recovery we accept you where you are regardless of your belief in higher powers or your relationship to spirituality. Spirituality is only 1 part of holistic recovery and is not necessary to take steps towards personal growth.

How is this different than other peer support groups?

We focus on holistic health and wellness. Each week we feature a topic that falls under the different aspects of holistic wellness (Mental and Emotional, Physical, Social, Spiritual, Intellectual, Environmental, Occupational, Financial, Etc.). We aim to create an inclusive space that differs from a typical 12-step group in that we don’t focus on the concept of addiction as a disease, sobriety as the end all and be all of recovery, or powerlessness. These meetings are not intended to impose any belief upon you but rather to incorporate your existing beliefs into a lifestyle and purpose that you can be proud of because it is “better” (as judged by you) than the life you were living yesterday
